Gradam CBI ar Colmán Ó Raghallaigh
Cló Mhaigh Eo - Book Publishers / Foilsitheoirí
CBI is delighted to announce that the winner of the CBI Award 2012 is Colmán Ó Raghallaigh. Each year the CBI award is presented to an individual or organisation in recognition of an outstanding contribution to the world of children's books in Ireland.

Le seacht mbliana déag anuas tá Colmán Ó Raghallaigh ag saothrú leis mar scríbhneoir agus mar fhoilsitheoir Gaeilge. Bíonn nuálaíocht le brath i gcónaí i saothar Cholmáin - ní hamháin sna leabhair a tháinig óna pheann féin (An Táin, Scéalta Ruairí agus go leor leor eile) ... ach bíonn nuálaíocht le brath freisin sna leabhair ar fad a fhoilsíonn a chomhlucht Cló Mhaigh Eo. I gCló Mhaigh Eo tugann Colmán deis do scríbhneoirí Gaeilge rudaí úra, rudaí spéisiúla a chruthú sa teanga.
Colmán Ó Raghallaigh is an award winning author and publisher and the founder of Cló Mhaigh Eo an innovative Irish Language publishing house. Established in Claremorris in 1995, Cló Mhaigh Eo has pioneered new types of publishing for children. From the first time Colmán's cheeky character Ruairi woke up to his 'droch lá', Colmán and Cló Mhaigh Eo have worked towards their mission to publish books in the Irish language that would be different in both style and content matter. Writing in Inis Magazine Liz Morris commented that Ruairi 'is accessible to those with even limited fluency in the Irish language, a combination of humour, language- and age-appropriateness that was until recently all too rare'
The books of Cló Mhaigh Eo have been recognised by a range of awards including two Bisto Merit Awards, a Reading Association of Ireland Special Merit award and an Oireachtas award for 'outstanding contribution to the development and promotion of reading in Irish for young people.' They have also been included on iBbY Honour Lists and represented Ireland in the tour of Europe in 27 picture books at the National Library of France in Paris and been recognised by the Illustrators Guild of Ireland.
It is appropriate for this award that it is the person behind the publishing house who is recognised. Colmán has combined creating his own memorable stories for children and teenagers with bringing a range of other authors and illustrators to books in Irish. Colmán has developed a broad and inclusive list for Cló Mhaigh Eo of books for all ages including poems, plays, original and translated books for younger readers as well as controversial and hard-hitting teen novels. Young and older readers alike have been delighted and entertained by characters like Roisín, Ruairí and Muinteoir Molly. He has worked with authors and illustrators such as Áine Ní Ghlinn, Annie West, Anne Marie Carroll, Ré O'Laighleis, The Cartoon Saloon, Gabriel Rosenstock and Liam Mac Uistín.
In 2000 Colmán brought to Irish and international markets an imaginative series of graphic novels based on the history and mythology of Ireland, making available in an exciting new format many stories which were not widely available in their original form. Colmán has always made himself available to talk about the importance of books for children and has been willing to engage with both children and adults.
